I have a similar problem. Kenmore mod# 110 20712 990, SER CK 1285993. Recently replaced drive coupling. Ran fine till today. Will fill and pump out but will not agitate or spin. Safety switch is ok. Checked drive coupling and it is fine. I can rotate it freely back and forth and see both motor and transmission sides turninoilg. All is clean below, no oil or leaks apparent. What should I do next??

Also check the input shaft on the tranny/gearbox, some get ground out.

When you say check the input shaft on the tranny do you mean where it goes into the bottom of the agitator?

replaced this coupler about 3 months ago. Could it be bad so soon? When I tilted machine up to get to the coupler, it would turn freely back and forth. I'll take it apart again and check. I guess if the transmission side of the coupler turns freely then it is ok, right? If that is the case what do you suggest then?

Nope.

Have seen some input shafts ground/round out and the coupler is good but the shaft isn't turning.

You were right. The coupler on the tranny side was rounded out. I just replaced this part 3 months ago. Is something wrong in the transmission causing this? Could it be the clutch or the drive dogs on the agitator? What should I try next? Clothes are piling up : )

Not normally, more a bad coupler. The input shaft is ok?...hope so!

Dogs, nope.....clutch not likely. Maybe add some silcone spray to the brake, hard or heavy braking can cause issues.

Ok Jeff,
Thanks for all your help. I installed a new coupler and everything is working well. Just hope it will last longer than the last one. The meal bushing on the tranny side was rounded out. For info, a parts guy told me that there is a heavier duty commercial version of the coupler available. Part no. 285752A. They didn't have one in stock so I didn't want to wait to order and bought the 285753A. Maybe this will help some others out there. Best to you and thanks again.

Yes, it has a fiber style in the middle instead of just rubber.
