GE 30" Free-Standing Gas Range - about 3 years old
Model # JGBP28DEM7WW

I'm trying to replace the latch assembly on my GE gas range. The top of the electrodes are bigger in diameter than the hole they protrude up thru in the cooktop. Thus, I can't lift the cooktop high enough to get to the latch. Or am I going about replacing the latch the wrong way?

Hi,

Remove the screws from all of the surface burners, lift the top enough to reach in and pull off the wires going to the ignitors.

Jeff,

I did like you said and removed all the screws from the brackets for the surface burners, lifted the top and removed the wires going to the ignitors. however, it wasn't til then that I realized that the ignitors are attached to the brackets for the surface burners. In other words, the cooktop still won't lift up.

It's kinda hard to see but the one picture in the first post shows how the ignitor is attached to the surface burner bracket. I've tried playing around with the ignitor to see if it will detach from the bracket but haven't had much success. I didn't want to mess with the ignitor too much in fear of breaking it. I didn't know if my next step would be to detach the surface burner bracket from the gas tube going to it???

Hold the burner base, pull straight up on the ignitor, should come out.
The ignitor just pushes into a pressure style clip...
