washer capacitor

No model number right now. In general, when you have a capacitor on a washing machine that tests to be good, what reading should the two wire from it show with the pull start switch pulled out in one of the cycles? Would the water level switch have to be satisfied for any reading to show?

The problem machine is a Frigidaire washer/dryer combo. The washer will only hum with no agitation or spin.

If the capacitor tests ok, leaves a bad motor or timer as prime suspects....(unless the tranny is seized up and won't turn in either direction).

I was ohming the capacitor. The transmission does turn by hand. I had suspected a bad motor.
I guess I should see about testing the motor and finding a schematic so I can test the timer.

Tried it again today with a new capacitor. Have to admit, I don't think I checked to see if the capacitors were rated the same. This was new one I had in stock for washers.

It filled with water then it would just hum and the motor seemed to get hot. Start windings?

Have a Maytag motor with the same number of leads and in the same positions, but there are differences. :(

M5 to M1 is start winding.

Visually, is it darkened....ohm it for continuity.

Could try a test cord on the motor....power/line to purple and black, neutral/white to orange and red.

Haven't checked the windings yet, but I did think to take a look at the cap I tried. It is only rated 189-227 mfd's.

A little low...usually can go 5-10% either way.

Could try a test cord on the motor....power/line to purple and black, neutral/white to orange and red.

There is no orange and red. There is an orange and a red but not orange and red.

On the harness connection there is continuity between BK/Purple,red, and BK/white.

On the motor itself there is continuity between yellow,blu, and white.

Also noticed what looked like might be windings in the motor that were shiny black, almost a gloss black. Burnt windings.

What I thought. I couldn't remember ever seeing black wire like this in a motor winding. It was so black and shiny like, with my eye sight, it almost looked like insulation on the wire.
