Noisy Whirlpool

Whirlpool 'Automatic Washer-- Super Capacity' is making a high-pitch 'chirping' noise during spin cycle.

I popped the top, cleaned things up a bit, and realize that this problem will be in the bottom end and will require some disassembly.

I'd like to determine what's wrong and if I'm qualified to make this repair and whether any "special tools" are required to fix it. I've fixed dryer door switches and a few dryer drum bands and things like that, but nothing to do with the motor or drive system for a washer.

This old Whirlpool has had a great career, so we will not hesitate to replace it, but if it can be repaired, I'll do it.

Your diagnosis/suggestions will be welcome.

Just the spin cycle produces the squeak. Drain out is OK.

Yes. That was printed/stamped near the edge of the lid right at the hinge, but I can check again. It's an old machine... maybe over 20 years old.

Make sure the belt is tight...

Sometimes a little rust gets on the basket-brake and drive assembly and we would add a couple small drops of oil onto the pulley top between the clucth pads and pulley ( #4 area in the pic )...

I'll go through the drill tomorrow. I suppose most of the time will be spent getting at the spin belt assembly.

Just pull the washer out and remove the small access panal at the back bottom.
