Will the timer advance in the auto cycle if the dryer is empty?

It is suppose to...but I found some won't as good as there is nothing to slow the air and heat down....I even find adding a little something at the exhaust ( a box or something near the back of the dryer ) helps when testing the auto dry with nothing in it.
