I tore into the fridge before posting, sorry. I am hoping someone can answer a few basic questions or steer me in the right direction in regards to trouble shooting the problem. At this very point the main problem appears to be the fridge is getting too cold. It all started with a few mouths of rumbling noise, which I believe to be ice on the freezer fan. I come home to find the freezer is thawing and refreezing and making a very load noise from the freezer fan. I shut down the freezer for the night. Morning time turn the freezer knob to 9. Freezer is now making running ,but no rumbling.
After about an hour the fan starts to rumble again. Now I remove the whole ice maker, all the shelves and the back cover that covers the coils. I tested the defrost heater, it was good. So I leave everything apart for a few days and watch on my remote temp gauge as the freezer goes from 0- to 38 degrees F. Goes like this for a few days, thaw-freeze cycle. Remember everything is apart and freezer is empty. So I go ahead and replace the defrost thermostat. Put everything back together, tight and proper. Now freezer goes from 10-28 degrees. Up and down. Maybe spending the most time around 15 degrees. Now the fridge side is in the 30's. The knob is set to 1. I turn the knob up and hear a click. The fridge is 12 years old. Where can I trouble shoot this? Where should the temp of a 12 year old freezer hold at? Should the temp change much? When I turn the temp knob down does it take a day to adjust or should the temp fall immediately? Thank you.
