Whirlpool: water entering during spin

Whirlpool Model LST7233 (top loading )about 18YO
For the last half year, at the end of the spin cycle the clothes in the drum have occasionally been very wet and I've had to repeat the spin cycle For the last 2 weeks, that's happened after every wash. At first I thought it was the direct drive mechanism (it's already been replaced twice) but the tub was spinning. Yesterday I opened the lid, put the control on spin and stuck a screw driver into the safety mechanism to allow the washer to spin with the lid open. Washer started to spin but water came pouring into the tub while it was spinning. What part do I need to replace to stop the water from entering the tub during the spin cycle?

It should, that is called a spray rince.....sprays water in while spinning.....if it does this at the incorrect spots or at the end of the spin cycle just before the washer is to shut off, the timer is then suspect.

I did not know that.

I just got back from doing a load in the "regular" cycle.
1)Water fill no problem
2)Agitation - no problem
3) rinse spin cycle - tub started to spin for maybe 30 seconds; stopped for 30 seconds and restarted and spun until water was gone
4) rinse - fill no problem. At the end of the rinse cycle tub spun for 30 seconds and stopped. Control knob was not yet at "spin" setting.
5)spin cycle - <click> - nothing. a few more clicks - nothing
Some water was still in tub
I moved control knob to "permanent press" spin cycle - tub spun (with spray rinse at beginning of cycle); water emptied and clothes became less wet.
I tried moving knob back to "regular" spin cycle - no action.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Lid switch -sounds- ok since the drain out started to operate. Missing parts of the cycle is more often than not a timer issue.....burnt/blackened timer contacts are common...
